Zhang graduated from Northeast Electric Power University with a major in Electrical Engineering in July 2013, at the age of only 23. In July, he signed a contract with Zhejiang Energy Group Taizhou Second Power Plant. On November 3, 2013, Zhang was dispatched by his employer, Zhejiang Energy Group Taizhou Second Power Generation Co., Ltd., to Shanghai Electric Power University along with other newly hired employees for training and learning. On the evening of November 9, 2013, at around 8:45 pm, Zhang and his classmates were exercising at the Shanghai Electric Power College Sports Stadium. Unexpectedly, the football door frame of the stadium fell and hit Zhang's head and face. Zhang was crushed to the ground and suffered serious head deformation. When he was admitted to the nearby Yangpu District Central Hospital, there were no vital signs such as heartbeat or breathing. At 9:15 pm, the hospital announced his death.
After the accident, Shanghai News Morning Post reporters rushed to the scene as soon as possible, but did not find any fixed connection device between the football door frame and the ground. After careful inspection, it was found that there were no warning or warning signs for the safety of using relevant sports equipment around the playground.
In the following days, the two football door frames of the Shanghai Electric Power University Stadium were quietly removed from the stadium at some point, and the stadium was opened to students.
After the accident on November 9th, the family members had multiple communications with the school. Shanghai Electric Power University still does not believe that it should bear safety responsibility for Zhang's accident, nor does it apologize to the family members of the deceased. In the end, it stated that it can only provide certain economic compensation on the basis of sympathy. However, the police have not responded to the requests made by the family on November 11th, and have not yet issued a written report on the accident investigation. Until now, Zhang's body is still stored in the morgue of Yangpu District Central Hospital, and the mother of the child is bedridden due to being unable to withstand the impact.
